books review
Lindsey Davis
Edinburgh International Book Festival/ Crime Fiction
Lindsey Davis' advice to aspiring authors: get an unfulfilling job, stick at it for about ten years accumulating life experience in the form of bitterness and misery, and only after gleefully quitting dedicate yourself to your writing career. Well, it worked for her, the creator of phenomenally successful series of books about Roman detective Falco, now approaching its twentieth installation. She has recently departed from classical whodunnits to turn her hand to the English Civil War, in a new novel exploring the history of her native Birmingham, realising a long-cherished childhood ambition. Davis' conversation resembles her books, in that it is unpretentious and jolly, candidly telling the story of her rise from disgruntled civil servant to best-selling author with honesty and humour.
