Andrey Kurkov

Writers Of The World

At the end of this session the compère exclaimed that “this has been one of the most enjoyable hours I’ve spent at the book festival.” It was easy to see why, given the Eastern European charm and charisma on display from his guest Andrey Kurkov. Ethnically Ukrainian but writing in Russian, Kurkov is a product of the post-Soviet USSR. His first book that was translated into English, ‘Death and the Penguin’, was described by the Daily Telegraph as being ‘a minor tragicomic masterpiece’ and since then, his stature has only grown. With a gift for the absurd and satirical, Kurkov has a unique voice and deftly fashions the surreal into the everyday; further great things are expected.
