Charley Boorman
Edinburgh International Book Festival/ The Baillie Gifford Event
It's that bloke off the telly who likes to whizz off to exotic locations on his motorbike. There's definitely something of the mid-life crisis about Charley Boorman, who swaggers on stage in a leather jacket and jeans slightly too tight for a man his age, boasting about his latest far-flung travels and all the crazy times he's had. Still, he retains a boyish charm and humility, acknowledging his gratitude to pal Ewan MacGregor for saving him from a failing acting career to make Long Way Round, which paved the way for him to become the professional adventurer he is today. Sincere enthusiasm compensates for a lack of eloquence (reliance on expressive words like 'brilliant'): Boorman undoubtedly has some great stories to tell.
