Tristram Stuart

Edinburgh International Book Festival/ Food And Society

Tristram Stuart sure hates waste. He's just dedicated a whole book to the subject, but, to drive the point home, he empties a bin-liner full of discarded bread found round the corner from the Book Festival, dramatically rips open a packet of ciabatta buns and takes a bite, exclaiming 'There's nothing wrong with this food!'. This striking gesture introduces a sober indictment of a shockingly wasteful consumer system, that reveals the impact our national penchant for discarding food has on global issues like world poverty and climate change. Stuart's talk also suggests pragmatic, achievable solutions to this problem: I left determined to bombard my local supermarket with angry letters, lobby my MP and, of course, finish every morsel on my plate.
