Will Self

Edinburgh International Book Festival/Meet The Author

On leaving the theatre a lady complained of being disappointed that Will Self had read for about fifty minutes of his allotted hour. I wondered to myself why she thought this was such a ‘lazy’ way of doing things as, in my experience, reading for that amount of time take a hell of a lot of stamina, plus, it was Will Self reading. I mean, he was incredibly funny and his writing is crisp and refreshing. There was no chair, no introduction (it wasn’t needed); Self is sufficient in his own right. I don’t see why I would want thirty minutes of banal Q&A when we had what we were here for in the first place: true literature.
