Paddy Ashdown

Edinburgh International Book Festival/Lived Lives

“He was a good talker” was the comment from the woman behind me, which was about the most boring, understated comment anyone could have made. Paddy Ashdown broke his audience in with laughter and then brought us to the brink of tears with his experiences - I wasn’t the only one; this became clear after speaking to one of the girls in the press tent. A symbol of the era of politics I grew up in, his name was one of the first I remember hearing on the news all the time. Even before he was in politics Paddy had travelled the world as soldier, student and spy, before spending eight years fighting for his constituency. A lived life indeed…
