Antony Sher
Edinburgh International Book Festival/ Meet The Author
Unlike so many authors, whose stumbling delivery indicates why they are best suited to written, rather than spoken, expression, Antony Sher is renowned primarily as a heavyweight of Shakespearean theatre, and his mellifluous tones resounded through the auditorium as he discussed the formative moments of his life. He revealed his isolation growing up in the macho culture of 1950s South Africa, and subsequent struggles with his identity, in the 'triple closet' of his nationality, his Jewish ancestry, and his sexuality. Moments of humour also occur as he related his first, naïve auditions, and gleefully quotes verbatim his letter of rejection from RADA. Sher always gives a compelling performance, even when the only part he's playing is himself.
