Irma Kurtz

Edinburgh International Book Festival/Age and Society

There was a spine-tingling moment in Irma Kurtz’s talk when everything she said fell into place. Just before she told one of the spookiest stories I’ve ever heard, Kurtz argued that with age what we lose in looks we gain in wisdom. And then she recounted her extraordinary memory. When she was a journalist in Paris she impulsively called Tennessee Williams to confirm an interview with him in London for the following day. At the last minute he cancelled. So Irma stayed in Paris and the plane she was meant to fly to London on crashed, killing all on board. ‘I owe Tennessee Williams my life’ she smiled with a quiet insight. There’s a lot to be said for experience.
