Chatroom
Exeter University Theatre Company
If told only its premise - angst-ridden teenagers talking on the internet - you might not be too excited by the prospect of a student production of Enda Walsh's 2005 play, 'Chatroom'. But this is not an attempt by a middle-aged playwright to be 'relevant'; there isn't a single 'LOL' or 'ROFL' in sight. Instead, it's an intriguing, witty script about depression and emotional manipulation. The concept of anonymous communication is put to good use and the play boasts the rare accomplishment of treating teenagers as human beings. This production by Exeter University Theatre Company is characterised by flawless performances and minimal props; it's delightful to see a young crew make light work of a mature piece of contemporary theatre.
