Beachy Head
Analogue/ The New WolseyTheatre, Ipswich/ Escalator East to Edinburgh
'Beachy Head' is an exciting and highly perceptive play, exploring the way people deal with the aftermath of suicide. The acting is as slick as the set transformations, in which props are cleverly moved in a smooth, dance-like fashion. Boxes are placed on shelves as Stephen walks behind to intimate an autopsy, while ingenious use of camera shots distinguish between 'real life' and flashbacks. The use of emotive music and refined lighting is extremely effective, whilst live filming shown on screens functions as another medium through which to create tension and reflect the emotions of grieving wife, Amy. Engaging, fast-paced, moving; a realistic look at dealing with suicide and the threshold between life and death.
