FBYO: Edinburgh Schools’ Jazz Orchestra

29th Festival of British Youth Orchestra’s

Featuring well-known pieces and former number ones from the jazz heyday of the 1930s right through to the 1970s, this performance was well-accomplished and a showcase of future talent. Solos played intermittently throughout provided further examples of musical ability but fought to be heard over the percussion and guitar playing; the baritone sax solo stood out well though. Explanations provided before each piece were useful if hard to hear, but updates on the progression of band members would only really be of interest to family and friends. Heavily influenced by American Jazz, the performance also included the popular ‘Pick Up The Pieces’ which originated from Fife. All in all a well programmed and performed rollercoaster through 4 decades of jazz
