comedy review

In this, the second of our ThreeWeeks etiquette columns, we would like to address the behavioural conundra that face the well-mannered Festival-goer in Week Two of the Fringe.

The goalposts have moved since Week One, as by now performers are aware of the quality of their show, or at least really should be. They have read their reviews, been to see other people’s shows and so know their place in the Fringe Pantheon. Audiences have seen both the best and worst things ever. The battle lines have been drawn, and mines have been laid. In order to navigate these potentially choppy waters, simply learn this handy conversation by rote and repeat to any performer you meet.

Hey. How’s the show going?
Yeah, no, no. Good. We had a bit of a quiet one on Wednesday, but yesterday we picked it up a bit so... yeah. Well. Well. How about you?
No, yeah, yeah. Good. Yesterday was a little so so, but we had a good crowd in on Wednesday so....
Well, it’s early days still.
Exactly... yeah.
So... have you seen ‘Aeneas Faversham Forever’ yet? I hear it’ll make you blow your fatty off.

If you are not a performer then feel free to pretend you have a show and repeat the above anyway. Say you’re doing a play about The Suez Crisis. No one will ask you any further questions. Or alternatively, simply learn the following:

How’s it going?
No, yeah, no. Really well. Wednesday wasn’t great, but...
Sorry I’ve got to go. I’ve got tickets for Pappy’s Fun Club at 6.40pm tonight in the Pleasance Courtyard.
Bad luck.
Oh, is it..?
Afraid so. Really not strong.

With these two speeches learnt, you really can’t go far wrong. Enjoy the Fringe and best of luck!
