Netochka Nezvanova - Nameless Nobody
Russikye Notchi/ Russian Nights Theatre
The strange, dimly lit and musty cavern in which this play is performed adds perfectly to its dark and moody atmosphere. The performer herself is captivating, beautiful and mysterious, telling every word of her story as if they were her last; reacting to everything with such an explosion of emotion and passion that you almost find yourself being absorbed by a tale that is far from unique. The musical effects are for the most part pleasant (though beware of a jolt to the nerves towards the end) but unfortunately they, and Vera Filatova’s admirable performance, try too hard to make a big deal out of a plot which ultimately fails to feel important. Worth going but don’t expect words as powerful as the actress.
